From The Chairman

As the 2017 – 2019 Chairman of the National Kenu & Kundu Festival Committee, it is with pride I welcome you to the 16th Anniversary of the National Kenu & Kundu Festival to be held from the 1st – 3rd November 2019 in Alotau, Milne Bay Province, PAPUA NEW GUINEA.

The Festival is one of the four (4) national festivals in Papua New Guinea’s cultural events calendar and it has become a major tourist attraction for Milne Bay tourism. The main role of the Festival is to promote, preserve and impart knowledge of our traditional kenu and kundu cultures to our future generations.

Since its creation and inception in 2003 by the Festivals first Chairman the late Mr John Kaniku, the Festival has attracted a growing following in Papua New Guinea and abroad and rightly so as our kenu and kundu culture and tradition are a way of life for all Milne Bayan’s and Papua New Guinea as a whole.

At infancy, the Festival had experienced growing pains and continues to do so as it adjusts to the technologically advancing world around it. With its theme ‘Restoration of Our Cultural Heritage’ the Festival seeks to find a balance between the developing world that our children are exposed to and yet maintain and preserve ones true identity. The education system is structured and setup to mold our children to fit into the developing world, however a balance must be found in order to preserve our kenu and kundu cultural heritage.

At the 16th National Kenu & Kundu Festival I look forward to displaying our cultural heritage by involving our younger generations, our children, utilizing our schools and private educational institutions throughout Milne Bay Province. I also extend an invitation to other kenu and kundu cultures throughout the country and the pacific to lodge your intent to participate and attend this year’s Festival.

I also welcome you all to browse our newly established website courtesy of the Milne Bay Provincial Government and encourage you to contact us for more information on the 16th National Kenu Kundu Festival, how to get here, costs involved in getting to the Festival, or your interest in participating this year at the Festival.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all participants’ young and old who have had some part in the Festival for the past 16 years and a big thank you to all our local sponsors who supported the Festival over 16 years.
